The Ionian Islands

You may have only heard of 3 Ionian islands, being Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Corfu. There are, infact, 7 main Ionian islands and several other smaller islands.

Zakynthos is the most popular and visited island of the main group. Known as the flower of the east from Venetian occupancy, it is said to have over 7000 species of flowers on the island. Zakynthos, or Zante is also famous for its 'shipwreck beach' which is widely used when advertising the island.

Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian islands and the most northerly. Lush and green, it has a wide variety of landscapes, from stunning beaches and coves to a rugged mountain range. This island is a firm favorite with holiday makers.

Kefalonia is my favorite of course with stunning scenery and rugged charm wherever you look. You can catch a ferry from here to Zante, Lefkada, Ithaca and Killini on the mainland making it an ideal base if you want to explore more than one of the Ionian islands.

Ithaca is the sister island to Kefalonia and is accessible by ferry from the port of Sami - well worth a visit. In the summer months you can get across to there for the day, or you can treat yourself and have a stay over night. The idea of a split centre between Kefalonia and Ithaca appeals to some. Its lush green appearance matches the expectations when you get there and there is not the evidence of harsh fires like here on Kefalonia.

Lefkada is a seperate island but is also connected to the mainland by a bridge. Dubbed the 'caribbean' of Greece - this island is another natural beauty spot and you will be hard pushed to tear yourself away at the end of a stay here.

Kythira - I have included in the Ionian islands - because it is and it isnt, well this is Greece!

Paxi is a natural beauty in itself. Legend has it that the island once belonged to Corfu, until Poseidon broke it away with his trident. The beaches and low key villages make for a peaceful holiday.

The smaller and lesser known islands are Antipaxi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Othoni, Meganisi ,the deserted island of Strofades, Skorpios (Onassis' private Island), Atokos and several other islands that cannot be accessed by tour operators. I hope your appetite for the Ionian has been well and truly whet!
