You Can Check Out Anytime You Like...
.... But you can never leave! We had an overnight stay in Argostoli. It is the capital of the island and is busy during the day, but really comes alive in the evening.
By day, you can walk along the harbour front and if you are really lucky you may spot one of the two resident gentleman turtles that come into the port. They are usually around when the fishing boats come in and sometimes get thrown fish by the fishermen, so it's worth visiting at this time.
The old lighthouse at the tip of Argostoli is also worth going to see. I believe that they start the sea kayaking here too. You can walk around the base and enjoy the view of Lixouri.
The fruit market is worth a visit too here. If you are staying in a Villa in Kefalonia or are going Self Catering I would recommend that you pop to Argostoli for some shopping as the resort supermarkets can be very pricey, one charging over 7 euros for two chicken breasts! There is a Lidl here too and us very reasonable! We tend to pop and stock up once every few weeks. Guys, don't shy away from the Greek beer either... Ermis and Mythos are both very good!
We were not on a shopping mission though, even though there are a number of boutique clothes shops and the usual sprinkling of souvenir shops. I hear Down The Rabbit Hole has some very beautiful pieces of jewllery and other nick nacks so is worth a visit. We had come to relax for the night together, something that does not happen for the summer months when you are dating someone that works in the tourist industry, so the night off was very much treasured by both. The hotel we had chosen was more than adequate for our needs and had an air of romance about it to. The Hotel Miramare was located on a quieter part of the harbour front at Argostoli. After getting ready and enjoying the views from our room, we ventured out into the main square of Argostoli. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you entertained here and life evolves around the central square or platia. There is a variety of tastes to suit all budgets here. But be warned, there is no McDonalds or indeed any fast food chain on the island, something that I find attractive and quaint! So fast food junkies may want to holiday elsewhere, may I suggest Benidorm!
