The Island...
So, we go back in time to my next trip to the island in August. The day eventually came again when I could return back to my beloved Kefalonia. My bags were packed and had been for some days, the house had been cleaned from top to bottom, I was ready to leave and was counting down the minutes for the taxi to arrive and take me to Birmingham Airport, my gateway to paradise!
I had been panicking because there was a scare in the news that a second volcanic eruption was imminent in Iceland. I had been checking the status of the volcano every hour, scared to death that there would be devastation to air traffic again. There was a small eruption, but no ash plume this time. Even at the airport I could not relax until I was airborne, 20 minutes late taking off due to weather conditions felt like forever, but soon we pushed back and I settled into my seat ready for departure.
I try to relax and unwind on the flight. It takes around 3 hours to get to Kefalonia, and there is usually someone sitting next to you to chat and share their experiences of the island, many people here are repeat visitors, it's hardly surprising given the beauty of the place. However, relaxing and unwinding when you know you are seeing the very person that makes you light up, in a few hours is hard, so I flit between excitement, nerves and trying to chill out. It's a nice feeling though, and I feel like I'm coming home. I watched the approach into the island, which is an adventure itself, and finally felt myself relax.
When I landed, I disembarked and came through passport control, it is only about ten steps until you arrive at the solo luggage carousel as it is only a tiny airport. I glanced over at the exit doors, my heart leapt as I spotted him leaning against the doors. I went over to him and hugged him hard, I won't go into all the details, but it felt so good and felt I was back where I belonged.
We waited for my luggage together, there does not seem to be any restrictions on who can enter arrivals here! And we waited, waited and waited, and the luggage carousel stopped. Thus is Greece after all. That feeling of my case didn't make it sunk in, but instead of feeling my usual despair and angst, I laughed. I didn't care, I was here on my island, Kefalonia does that to me. It relieves me of all my worries and cares, I had a few clothes there from my last trip, so I didn't mind. However, after sharing some funny anicdotes about sharing his clothes and shoes, the luggage carousel chugged into life again and out came my pink spotted suitcase with all my wares in it!
We left the airport together, and I breathed in deep gulps of the clean Kefalonian air. New adventures were about to begin for us. It was hot, sunny and we were both extremley happy at being together again. Good times were ahead and I was going to enjoy every minute of it. I can't wait to share with you all some more wonderful sights of a Kefalonia, and how I ended up staying on the island for almost a month...
