R.I.P Demis
With the BIG move from the UK to Greece, I have had lots of inspiration for my writing, but not much time to write. There is so much to do here in Greece, and one must follow the Greek way of life, which consists of eating, looking out of the window at what is going on in the neighbourhood, cooking lunch, ouzo, eating again, ouzo, siesta for a couple of hours in the afternoon, hosing the balcony and terrace, sweeping the house, only for the wind to blow it all back in again, and then eat some more, play some backgammon, drink ouzo and then go to bed. I am kidding of course, there are the goats and chickens to look after too!
I digress. The reason for me writing today was that I felt I needed to pay a tribute to the late Greek legend, Demis Roussos, who passed away on the 25th January 2015, aged only 68 years old. Roussos started his early career in a progressive rock group called 'Aphrodites Child' along with Vangelis, known for his composing of 'Chariots of Fire' among many other great pieces of music.
Roussos had a colourful career, although maybe not as colourful as his taste in Kaftan's, for which he was famously known for wearing. He sold over 60 million albums worldwide and was as popular as Elvis according to some. This much loved Greek singer, was also bizarrely caught up in a TWA hijacking incident in 1985 while on a trip from Athens to Rome, but was released after only 5 days, when most people were captured for at least 17 days.
I first heard of Demis Roussos from an esteemed colleague of mine Geoff, who was an avid lover of anything Greek! From then on his name was heard from time to time and when I started listening to BBC Radio 2, I became more popular with his melodies, courtesy of our very own UK legend, Ken Bruce. From the upbeat Una Paloma Blanca, to the soft crooning of the popular Por Siempre Y Para Siempre, there is no mistaking that Demis Roussos' voice touched the hearts of many throughout his career, and will be sadly missed around the world.
For now, I will leave you with the soothing sounds of Por Siempre Y Para Siempre...
