Tsiknopempti.... BBQ Thursday!
Today here in Greece, the scent of charcoal is rife in the air, and everywhere smells delicious. The reason being is everyone dusts off their BBQ's and cooks their meat outside today, marking the day known as Tskiknopempti. Pronounced tseek-no-PEMP-tee, this day signals the start of the 2 weeks before Lent. We celebrate meat basically, as during the period of Lent, for 40 days and 40 nights, devout Orthodox followers will forgo eating meat and some other food groups for this duration.
My partner has expected me to follow suit, but I am not sure I can go for that long without meat or dairy!! Sunday sees the start of the celebration, the 22nd February, during the period between then and the 2nd March (Clean Monday), the Greek Orthodox are supposed to eat all the remains of any meat and dairy products from the house, ready for the fasting period up until Easter. I posed the question can I eat fish, but the answer was a big fat 'Ohi' (No!). You cannot eat anything from an animal that has blood is the bare bones of it. I don't think I can make the whole period, but I will give it a go!
Happy BBQ Thursday everyone!
